My earliest childhood memories center around trips to Jones Beach on Long Island. It seemed an interminably long trip for a child—I just looked it up and it was only twenty minutes away. But for a kid growing up in New York, it was like another planet. My mother would apply a thick layer of Coppertone to my brother and I, and to this day, the smell tales me right back to Jones Beach.
